Sesame cake feeding for dairy cows
1994
Nutritive value and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) were evaluated in sesame cake. Dry matter, crude protein, ether extract, ash, calcium and phosphorus content were 92.53, 39.10, 15.42, 12.64, 2.52 and 1.32 percent repectively. IVDMD of sesame cake was 69.11 percent, lower than soybean meal (SBM) (81.32 percent). Substitution of sesame cake for SBM causes IVDMD of the dairy cow ration decreased. Twenty lactating crossbred cows (53-84 percent Red Dane) were used in the experiment. The animal went on trial approximately 2-3 months after calving. They were randomly divided into 5 groups, each group was divided into 4 experimental periods and each period consisted of 15 days duration. The design of the trial was Split Plot in Time (Randomized Blocks Design) to determine the effects of feeding concentrate of different levels of sesame cake to substitute SBM for protein supplementation on the performance of the animals. The levels of sesame cake in the treatment rations were 0, 14, 28 and 42 percent respectively. There were no significant differences in milk production, milk constituents, feed consumption and body weight of cows observed among the four treatments, under the condition of this experiment, the following conclusions appear justified; The sesame cake can be used as protein supplement in the ration as much as 42 percent. The cost of the ration is reduced as the level of sesame cake in the ration is increased.
